Senator Sheldon Whitehouse to Visit Ocean State Job Lot in Richmond to Explore the Retailer’s Commitment to Sustainability Efforts, including Solar Energy
WHAT:
Ocean State Job Lot (OSJL), a leading discount closeout retailer headquartered in Rhode Island with 152 stores throughout New England, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, will host Senator Sheldon Whitehouse for a tour of the solar array on the roof of OSJL’s store located at 12 Stilson Road in Richmond, Rhode Island.
OSJL’s rooftop solar array in Richmond is the company’s third, and part of the retailer’s ongoing plan to host the largest rooftop solar portfolio in Rhode Island, hosted atop its stores from Westerly to Woonsocket. This solar portfolio is just one representation of OSJL’s continued dedication to expanding sustainability initiatives company-wide and to giving back to their community.
In 2022, OSJL received a Sustainability Award from the Business Intelligence Group, which recognized OSJL’s efforts to make sustainability an integral part of its business practice and overall mission. In 2018, in an effort to lower their carbon footprint, OSJL made a $2 million investment to revamp their distribution center and a $12 million investment to replace the lighting in all of their store locations. As a direct result of energy modernization and a complete LED rollout, OSJL reduced their overall energy consumption by 17.4 million kWh in just one year. It also instituted a successful recycling program across all offices, facilities, and stores, which generated $1.14 million in revenue in 2021 and made OSJL a Net Zero Waste company.
